Foreword

Dear readers,

If you want to be successful in professional and personal communication, then this book is for you, as it gives some good training on listening and speaking skills. Good listening kills doesn’t mean simply hearing what has been said, but it involves paying attention and fully understanding the main idea of the speaker.

People have different reasons to listen: getting information for work, learning something or just entertaining, but surprisingly, most of them don’t listen well. As Scott William’s (Wright University) research demonstrates, usually we listen to only 25% of what we hear. And as James Manktelow (CEO of Mindtools) claims, good listener can build stronger relationships with people around them by showing attention, full understanding, and showing acceptance of the transmitted message.

In addition to bad listening skill as for being inattentive and not interested in the interlocutor, there is a huge problem with foreign language listening, but as many others listening skills need practice. So, this book provides some radio and video programs, comprehension and vocabulary exercises that will help you on the way of becoming a good listener.

Among the tips for being a good listener are: give your full attention on what you are listening; make sure your mind is focused too; listen to the main ideas first, and then try to catch the details. So, I wish you every success in studying with Listen Up!

Kind regards, Author
